Not that anyone actually reads this. But here are some updates in the fine world of 386 Films. PARTING is making its way out into the festival world. This is a long ass process that takes months of waiting to find out if the film has been accepted. During this time The streamable film has to be pulled from all sites. So. We wait.

386 Films is venturing into a new territory of commercial projects. Under a new banner, the web site will be launched soon. A few projects are in the works. A commercial for a local business and a music video shoot for a musician with a famous last name will be done by February. More on these later.

We are also searching for a new narrative project to begin soon.

11.15.08

PREMIERE TIX

For a small "donation" for the cause, tickets to the PARTING premiere are available at the link below. Still lots to do. Yikes! Waiting on final score to replace stand-in music. Waiting for final audio mix. Waiting to complete all final touches. Waiting isn't really waiting at all. With the fast approaching deadline and a party planned, so much to do. Luckily, we have angels around that offered their services and support to make this happen. Now its up to the team to pull it all together and rock out this premiere. Sound is equally if not more important. But even before there was sound in those old scratchy black/white moving pictures there was music. Nothing is more powerful in film than the right chemistry coupling of powerful music and its visual love slave. Music can often take a back seat in most movies. Its the river upon which the pretty sail boats glide. Its there. Subliminally or in your face. It just is. Nothing gets the goose bumps popping more than finding that right piece of music for the right piece of story. Sometimes the score isn't "music" at all. Sometimes it's drones of noise artfully arranged. This, to me can be just as beautiful as a 70 piece orchestra. Music for PARTING is being composed from many angles. Chris Fragale (aka Red Orchestra) is composing original pieces ranging from classic music beds to aforementioned drones. Tony Ionno (aka Tony Ionno) is also composing and contributing music ideas. While I fill in the accent pieces and underbelly sounds, where when combined and layered this three tier cake makes one hell of a musical marriage. Music can swing a scene from one spectrum to another. It sets the tone. Wrong music for a scene can completely alter its feel and acceptance. Music cannot out weigh the visuals or story either. The magic is in the balance. I think we have spent about equal working hours on the visuals and the audio to this point in post-production. By the time we wrap this fish, that newspaper will be music heavy. We got a lot of complements for the score of our previous film, Breaking Val. I think you'll find the PARTING score to be even more delicious. Stay tuned.

PRODUCTION SHOTS

Throwing some props at all those that made Parting possible.
Please check out the PRODUCTION GALLERY.

PARTING - Big budget or small, editing IS the story telling. Control over every frame, choice of shots, intimate detailed decisions. I imagine trust would be high. There are some famous pairings of directors and their editors. Martin Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker come to mind. It may just be me, but with all the pre-planning and visualizing I find it hard to give up the second half of the process. For 386 Films, for most of the endless hours, I sit in the editing chair. Mike and I discuss the look and rhythm and the basic feel beforehand, but once in the chair and the film starts to come to life there are endless decisions and nuances of details to look after. How long do you let a stare go on for? What is the right pace of cuts for this scene? Which shots match best? Color correcting, sound equalization, music, and on and on and on. With low end film making and available equipment, personnel, and situations often out of your control, there will be technical, performance and all sorts of "glitches" that plague your film. When editing these come to light very very clearly. The visual shot is great but what's that hum in the audio? The audio is perfect, but the camera shook right in the middle of the actor's line. The shot was incredible but the actor just missed on the performance for that take. Editing a cohesive scene around multi-level obstacles is enough to make you want to trade your camera for a box of crayons, so much less stress. Mike and I tend to over shoot our coverage and on PARTING we shot two camera 80%. That's two files of footage per scene take. Some scenes hit as high as 9 or 10 takes. 20 files to choose from. For a clip that will probably be on screen for 3.2357 seconds. Talk about a fun time picking shots. A badly shot film can be saved in the editing room as well as the unfortunate reverse. It's an incredible challenge that tends to be the most tedious and relentlessly boring aspect of film and the most thrilling and rewarding often in the same moment. A jigsaw puzzle with endless fitting pieces that somehow makes a recognizable picture in the end.

"The essence of cinema is editing. We wrapped early every day...now that's a good shoot! Robbie and Jenn were two of the most professional and well prepared actors we have worked with. Their grasp of the material and memorization of the 14 page script was flawless. Our scheduled rehearsals combined with their own meeting and rehearsing proved to be an incredible asset. The only problem...no blooper reel! Our crew once again was outstanding. We kept a brisk pace and everyone was firing on all cylinders as Mike and I shot a two-camera set up for 80% of the shoot. I even got to experiment with some experimental shots off the original schedule which usually makes Mike clench his teeth.

Sunday, was a tough day due to number of set ups, scenes using a large number of extras, and a small aside to do an interview with local press (Article - more on article in next post).

Special thanks go out to Phil Sr. and Phil Jr. of the Brooklyn Caffe, who generously donated their establishment for us. Its a great cafe with good food and a nice atmosphere. They have live music every week too! From the camera to lighting and of course dollies and jibs. For the Parting shoot, which boils down to a conversation across a table, I really wanted a two-camera set up. One shooting each actor so the subtleties of the performance would not be lost through endless takes due to moving the camera into a new position. Unable to secure a DP for this project, we set as we have always done doing it ourselves with our Panasonic DVX100. An incredible camera for shooting 24P (the look of film in a digital camera). Many brands and models claim to shoot the "film" look but nothing in the price range comes close to the DVX100 even at double the price. Mostly the other cameras, although superior in crisp, clear high definition image, look more like a soap opera than a real film. So with a week left the search was on for another "cheap" DVX100. There are plenty of these used jewels around since everyone is looking to jump up to the pricey HVX which is true HD. I scoured the web for a deal (some too good to be true), but the bulk of cameras were of course on that giant virtual yard sale, Ebay. I am not an avid Ebay buyer. So this whole bidding and losing at the last 3 seconds thing doesn't work well for me. Especially when you know the price is really way higher than you're willing to pay and more than "market" value. I needed to make a purchase tonight. With shipping days it would be tough to get it in time for the shoot. There were five auctions through out the day for the DVX100. I had rehearsal, so my wife was left to bid with specific high limit guidelines. I received phone texts throughout the day as we lost out on each passing auction by several hundred dollars. By the time rehearsal ended we were resigned to a one-camera shoot. But wait...one last auction ending at 11:30 pm. Its now 8:00. I still have time. Looks like a good camera, but who really knows. I continue to frantically search all my chosen sites for any other deals. 9 o'clock, 10 o'clock, 11 o'clock. My wife is urging me to get it. Mike (on IM) is assuring me its a good deal so far. Some how no one is trying to talk me out of spending a large some of money for this camera. Dang! 11:25. I watch, but don't bid. 26, 27, 28. Mike likes to IM me with the countdown as if I don't know. Less than a minute. 30 seconds. I frantically refresh my screen. 15 seconds. I punch in my highest bid. ENTER. Waiting. Oh damn there is a confirmation screen!!!

ENTER

ENTER

ENTER...where is the enter key?

ENTER!

Auction ends. Refresh screen. I search the page. I think I see the winning bid.

I tell the wife..."I didn't win" She assures me its OK (I'm sure she was secretly relieved).
Mike IMs me. "Holy Shit You WON!"
What?? I look again. But what? How? Oh Man! I did win. We got another camera for the shoot! I am freaking out with excitement. I should be excited! But THEN realize I need to pay for it now.

Hmmm should have thought this through.

THe new owner of one slightly used Panasonic DVX100. Sure hope it gets here by Friday.

Thank you Ebay for a thrilling night of sweats and stress.

FINAL REHEARSAL

The Saturday before GO day. Ever try asking a diner owner to close their business for 2 days so you can move in and shoot your small movie in their establishment? Oh and would they do it all for free?? Tough sell. But still, as film makers we go on and bravely march into these fine establishments to do just that. And when you get a possible location, and a cooperative owner, you seriously contemplate passing on the place because it doesn't meet your visual aesthetics to tell your tale. It's sick I tell ya! Sick!

THE PARTING CAST

It took some work to find our "Cal" and "Sara" but it was well worth the time and energy. Born and raised in Memphis, TN, Robbie Cox has always had a passion for the arts. He began acting in 2000 at Cordova high school, where he was in a minimum of 4 main stage productions a year. This propelled him into a deeper study of the craft at the University of Southern Mississippi where he received his BFA with an emphasis on acting. Robbie is now a certified ballroom and Latin dance instructor at A Social Affair Dance Studio in Jacksonville, where he plans to compete professionally in the American Rhythm Division by the end of the year. The dancing provides him a great way to continue his growth and discipline as an artist while he continues his pursuit of acting.

JENNIFER WARD

Jennifer Ward was born and raised in Zephyrhills, FL. She graduated from the University of Central Florida in Orlando with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology in 2002. Acting has always been a dream of Jennifer's but was placed on the back burner to pursue more "realistic" goals. The suicide of her brother in late 2006 brought into sharp focus that she was wasting her life by not pursuing her true passion. In the span of nine months Jennifer completed six films and was nominated for an award at the completion of Core Film Acting at Art's Sake Studio in Winter Park, FL. Especially for a short lo/no budget film. For Parting we did our best to hit all the best websites that cater to the central Florida area. Our own website, Craigslist, Mandy, Greenroomorlando and a few others. We made the notice as specific as possible with a major emphasis on actors needing to be able and willing to drive to the Daytona Beach area for casting, rehearsals, and shooting. It was amusing at first then just annoying later to receive headshots and inquiries from Miami (5 hours away), Georgia, Tennessee, New Jersey, New York, and even Sweden and Australia. Come on...are these people serious? As it turns out...No they aren't. I don't think 90% of submitters even read the entire casting call. Another request to be considered was that you had to attach a resume and headshot (under 2MB file). We received every version of that...headshot, no headshot, picture files of 12 MB, resume or not, links to external websites, and just strange cryptic messages. So a lot of review time and trading of emails gets wasted on people that don't even take the time to follow the directions in a casting notice. Cue for potential actors...If you can't follow directions in a casting notice, how will you follow directions on set?

But there was some great actors that read for the part. Our decision was tough, especially for the lead female role. Luckily, we got two great actors for the lead roles, Robbie Cox and Jenn Ward. More on them in a later post.

GETTING STARTED

We've been hunting for a while now for the next project. We had false starts on a few including a feature horror film and a music video for a local rock band. Both went bust. While we have so far handled all of the production duties ourselves, we thought this time around lets mix it up. So we plan to get outside crew members in to help including a DP and extra Grip. But the biggest change was getting a script from an outside source. This was not fun! We posted in a few select places for the kind of script we wanted. What we got was 100s of scripts we didn't want. Wading through all that mumble jumble of writing could make one do mean drastic things to themselves just to show they still feel. My gums bleed from clenched teeth. My hands have turned into tiny....you get the idea.

But alas - when we had given up - not one, not two, but three possibilities kicked us in the teeth. One of those is our new production today. They seem to be a happy blue collar couple to the outside world. The reality, however, is very different. Tom is an abusive and brutally obsessed husband. Valarie has tolerated the beatings and abuse in a misguided assumption that she can rehabilitate her husband from his evil ways. The project was to be a five minute submission for an online film festival. Festival requirements were a five minute max length, theme of "darkness", and to visually show a glass of red wine. After the contest version was complete and submitted the "director's cut" was produced and is the end result available today.

PRODUCTION NOTES: Shot on location at PennyFlix Studios, and The Brooklyn Cafe -South Daytona, Florida. Prop chair was constructed by Mike & Joops two days pre-shoot. Exhaustive month long search for the right chair was fruitless. The stain was still drying as camera rolled. The special effects (break away chair arm, blood squirter, glass) were also done in-house as well as the FX make up. Lindy Taylor was physically taped to the chair for most of the 28 hours of shooting.

EQUIPMENT: Panasonic DVX100 camera / Glideshot dollies, jibs, rigs / Marantz audio recorder with shotgun mic / 500 watt shop light, Dell Workstation, Maxtor storage drive, Vegas editing software, Soundforge audio software.

NOTABLE MOMENT: During a break in filming Joops went outside the studio to see a police cruiser pulling up and stopping in front of actor, Jeremy Nikolow, who was in full bloody neck-slashed make up and still bound with duck tape. With all this wealth of equipment at his finger tips he decided it was time to put it to use. Mike hosts a Low/No budget oriented chat forum: Pennyflix.com Now with multiple projects scheduled into the future he continues to pursue the life of a filmmaker.

And now a little about me...

JOOPS FRAGALE
Director . Writer

Joops (aka Jason), has been playing movie maker since junior high running around his New York home town with the giant VHS cameras and it has never stopped. With an education in Illustration, Advertising Design, and Film/TV production, he brings his unique visionary style to all his projects. Joops has worked in front and behind the camera, wearing many hats, on many varied projects from short films, TV pilots, to an award winning national commercial. Through his creative design company, HazyHead Studios, he has also been honored for his design work in print and web sites. He is also creative director for Irreverant Greetings, a greeting card company. When it comes to film making, it’s the challenge of bringing script to screen that he finds most thrilling. Once the project is completed, it has a very short shelf life before he’s looking for the next big adventure.

And now...the men behind the numbers...

The duo filmmakers met when Mike posted a listing on Craigslist looking for fellow filmmakers in the Daytona area. The first meeting brought nine folks out to discuss the possibilities of a project. With each weekly meeting the numbers dwindled until Mike and Joops forged ahead creating their company and adding other key members to their crew. Nicole Long as Executive Producer/Costume Design/Hair and Make Up, Tony Ionno as Executive Producer and Sound Design, and Eric Freudenthal as Executive Producer, Super Grip and all around Best Boy. The team set out with enthusiasm to plan and produce their first project together and have never looked back. 386 Films now works out of their production office in Port Orange, Florida.

The next postings will cover our past short films, Mama's Boys and Breaking Val. Then we'll be on to the production posts for the new project. Stay tuned.
